Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your first class
Can I try a class before signing up?

Yes. Your first class is free and with no commitment. Message us on WhatsApp and we'll confirm the day with you.

Do I need previous experience in martial arts?

No. Most of our students started from scratch. Training adapts to your level and you progress at your own pace.

Do I need to be fit to start?

No. A traditional martial art is not a gym: physical condition is built progressively through practice, adapted to each person.

What should I wear to my first class?

Comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict your movement. If you already have a lightweight keikogi from another discipline, feel free to bring it.

Is there an age limit?

We train from the age of 17 (minors need written permission from a parent or guardian). There is no upper limit: Bujinkan is an art you can devote your whole life to, and one that pays off in a more active and enjoyable old age.

What does training a traditional martial art give me?

It forges character and teaches you to master your emotions. Evoking the mindset and the body of a warrior on the battlefield of feudal Japan builds your tolerance, patience and resilience. Physically, you develop the balance between strength and flexibility: we don't want to be so strong that we become rigid, nor so flexible that we lose the structure to fight.

Is it useful for self-defence?

Yes. The Bujinkan preserves techniques created for real combat, with no sporting rules. It is pragmatic and focused on protecting your life — though, like any serious art, it requires consistency.

Are there grades, exams or competitions?

There is a traditional grading system (belts and dan ranks), but there are no competitions: the only competition is with yourself.

Can I train if I have an injury or health condition?

Check with a healthcare professional first and let us know before you start. Training can be adapted.

What if I can't come every week?

The regular class is on Mondays and the special one on a Saturday each month. Progress depends on consistency, but everyone moves at their own pace.

Can you recommend another dojo if I live far from Sant Cugat?

Yes. What matters is that the art reaches you: we work with partner dojos we trust completely in Girona, Barcelona, Granollers, Terrassa, Rubí, Blanes and Mataró. You'll also find them listed on this page.
